Megan Richards calls Cape Town home, she describes herself on her blog The Authentic Girl as a Curvy woman on a mission to save the world from body shaming. She started blogging in 2014 and ever since promotes body positivity and covers food, beauty and fashion. The Capetonian wants to empower women to be who they are and not to be too scared to just be the one they are. She is adventurous and never shy to try something new. Here she tells us what she loves in Cape Town.

The Touristin: Three words that characterize Cape Town?

Megan Richards: Quirky, creative and beautiful.

The Touristin: How do you get around Cape Town?

Megan Richards: I get around by car, Uber and public transport.

The Touristin: What is the best kept secret about Cape Town?

Megan Richards: There are so many hidden beaches in Cape Town. One of my favourite discoveries this year was Smitswinkel beach. You cannot get there by car and have to hike for about 15 to 20 minutes from Simonstown beach.

The Touristin: What is your favourite borough/suburb/area in Cape Town and why?

Megan Richards: I love the leafy areas around Cape Town, like Constantia and Claremont. Going for walks in Constantia/Claremont helps me to re-connect to nature. One of my favourite shopping malls, Cavendish Square is located in Claremont, which I visit more often than I should. I love the shopping experience. Of course no shopping experience is complete without coffee and treats from Kahve. Visit Kahvé Road.

Born and raised in Cape Town, I am mad about the city (CBD) and love Bree Street! There are so many award winning restaurants that offer the most delicious food. If you love food, you have to experience the culinary food scene in Bree Street.

The Touristin: The best place for a hot chocolate or coffee in Cape Town?

Megan Richards: I can’t decide between Origin and Truth, both are equally great! Visit Origin Coffee Roaster and Truth Coffee Roasting.

The Touristin: What is one restaurant we must try out while in Cape Town?

Megan Richards: I love Four and Twenty restaurant! It’s one of my favourite foodie spots in Cape Town. They make the most delicious breakfast/lunch meals and offer some of the tastiest sweet delicacies too. I enjoy the entire experience from the service to the food, everything is spot on! Make sure you reserve a table as they are always fully booked.

The Touristin: Where would we meet you on weekends?

Megan Richards: On weekends I enjoy visiting markets, wine estates and eating out. I always opt for activities that inspire me – I am inspired by good food, the ambience of my surroundings and the superb wine South Africa has to offer.

The Touristin: Do you have a favourite museum/gallery we all have to visit when in Cape Town?

Megan Richards: My favourite contemporary art museum is The Zeitz MOCAA based at The Silo Hotel. I am moved by art. My experience at The Zeitz museum evoked emotions of joy, sadness and curiosity. Visit zeitzmocaa museum.

The Touristin: What are some of your favourite places to shop for A) groceries and B) clothes?

Megan Richards: A) I love Woolworths; it’s my go-to store for groceries. The quality and shopping experience is superb! The Wellness Warehouse is a firm favourite of mine too; I get all my healthy ingredients from them.

B) This is tricky as I have so many favourite clothing stores in Cape Town. Mungo & Jemima sells the most beautiful pieces made by talented designers in South Africa. My favourite online store is Superbalist.com.

The Touristin: What souvenir shall we bring back from Cape Town?

Megan Richards: Spoil yourself with clothing from a South African designer; our fashion is world-class, on-trend and fashion-forward. Whatever you do, do NOT leave without a case of South African wine, we won’t judge (hahaha).

The Touristin: Thank you so much for your time Megan, I wish you well and the very best of luck with The Authentic Girl.
