A lot has been said about Berlin and it is certainly a special place. I want to add, just as special as are all other towns in this world. It is not worse or better than others, it is just different. Roughly 3.5 Million people call Berlin home, one might think it is a crazy busy town, whereas in reality, it isn’t. It is a capital city but at times feels like a provincial town. Berlin might not have a proper airport, but it has two really cute ones. Winters are freezing cold but summers are amazingly warm and long. And I could go on and on and on. Here is what others had to say about Berlin over the centuries.
Theodor Fontane: As soon
as you enter Berlin, it is over with chic and elegance.
Marlene Dietrich: I still
have a suitcase in Berlin.
Frédéric Chopin: ... my
general impression of Berlin, however: it is too tremendous for the Germans as
it seems, it could easily accommodate twice as many residents.
J. F. Kennedy: Ich bin
ein Berliner.
Klaus Wowereit: Berlin
is poor but sexy.
Kurt Tucholsky: The
horizon of the Berliners is by far not as large as its city.
Franz von Suppé: You are
crazy my child. You have to go to Berlin.
Honoré de Balzac: Imagine
a Geneva lost in a sand desert, and you have an idea of Berlin. It might one
day become the capital of Germany, but it will always be the capital of
boredom.
David Bowie: Berlin,
the biggest cultural extravaganza one can imagine.
Beethoven: The
entire Berlin audience is well educated.
Fjodor M. Dostoevsky: But, oh
my god, what a boring, dreadful town Berlin is.
