Eyewitness Rome: Loredana Cardinale from Walks

Loredana Cardinale lives in Rome, the capital city of Italy. Isn’t that what most people dream of? Living the life in the eternal city? She loves travelling and that is certainly the reason she understands what visitors would love to experience when they visit her home town. She made her passion her job and works at Walks. I asked her about Rome and she tells us where to best buy fresh produce, go for drinks at night and which hidden secret you better put on your Rome to-do list …

THE TOURISTIN: Three words that characterize Rome?

Loredana: Fascinating. Multifaceted. An ancient city struggling to become modern.

THE TOURISTIN: How do you get around Rome?

Loredana: Walking, public transportation, car-sharing.

THE TOURISTIN: What is the best-kept secret about Rome

Loredana: There are many, many secrets still hidden in the underground of Rome. One that has been recently discovered is the Underground Basilica of Porta Maggiore.

THE TOURISTIN: What is your favourite borough/suburb/area in Rome and why?

Loredana: My favourite boroughs are Testaccio and Monti. Both centrally located, they still have the feel of lively, independent villages full of little, local restaurants and bars.

THE TOURISTIN: The best place for a hot chocolate or Espresso in Rome?

Loredana: The best place for a hot chocolate or Espresso in Rome is the Emporio alla Pace, in Via di Tor Millina, near Piazza Navona. You can also accompany it with home-made cookies and muffins!

THE TOURISTIN: What is one restaurant we must try out while in Rome?

Loredana: You shouldn't miss a typical Amatriciana or Gricia at "Fattoincasa by la Danesina", in Via del Governo Vecchio OR a roman-style pizza at "Remo" in piazza di S. Maria Liberatrice (Testaccio).

THE TOURISTIN: Where would we meet you on weekends?

Loredana: Over the winter, you would meet me for an aperitif, usually at Rec 23 in piazza dell'Emporio, for a glass of wine accompanied by some finger-food, to chit-chat with friends in a relaxed environment.

In the summer season, you would probably meet me in one of the parks of Rome. The Park of the Aqueducts, at the end of the Old Appian Way, is my favourite. Or you might not find me, as I might have escaped from the heat of the city to refresh on the seaside, along the coast.

THE TOURISTIN: Do you have a favourite museum/gallery we all have to visit when in Rome?

Loredana: Everybody should see the Roman Forum and the Borghese Gallery once in their lifetime. OK, maybe the Colosseum - better if at night - too!

THE TOURISTIN: What are some of your favourite places to shop for A) groceries and B) clothes?

Loredana: I love to shop at the Market in Testaccio. Products there are usually coming from nearby local producers thus fresher and tastier.

My favourite street for clothes shopping in Rome is Via dei Giubbonari, near Campo de' Fiori.

THE TOURISTIN: What souvenir shall we bring back from Rome?

Loredana: A lot of pictures to frame and maybe some "coppiette" (traditional, desiccated pork meat sticks) to snack on. :)

THE TOURISTIN: Thank you so much for your time Loredana all the best to you.
