5 things which qualify a bag as a smart travel companion

A few weeks back, it was right at the beginning of spring, I went to a bakery to buy fresh and crusty bread for dinner. I was nearly back home, when out of a sudden this handbag displayed in a store window grabbed my attention. Oh the perks of life in Berlin.

It looked like it would be able to become a trustworthy friend. It looked sturdy and loyal, like it wouldn’t complain about living a life too adventurous. I was looking for somebody who was not too afraid to live a life truly. Somebody who loves visiting incredible Restaurants. Somebody who likes exhibitions and seeing a play but was also able to handle the heat and dust while driving through the desert or the savannah. Somebody who would also never ever mind waiting on the beach watching the waves come crashing in while I go for a swim and who would also like to go hiking or browsing book stores. Somebody who fancied camping in the bush just as much as sleeping in Egyptian cotton bed linen at a boutique hotel.

Me and my handbag on the road

Do you also believe that there is nothing, really nothing, like a versatile handbag? My heart started to beat faster and I went inside the store. When I touched the soft leather we formed a bond immediately. I bought the bag and took it home with me. It was love at first sight really. I am sure the bag had just been made for me, or so …

I take it with me all the time. So far I enjoyed its company in Carmel, Malibu, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Death Valley, Las Vegas (USA), Venice (Italy), Stockholm (Sweden) and Vorarlberg (Austria) tremendously. It is light and it really supports me with holding all my stuff: My jacket for these unforeseeable chilly moments, my camera, my notepad and pen. Depending on where I go, even my iPad never had problems to find room in it. As you will clearly gather the better quality my bag is the happier I am and finding this bag was a turn-up for the books. Unless I go on a large outdoor trip I prefer to travel with a leather handbag instead of a backpack.

5 things which qualify a bag as a smart travel companion

1. It has to have zippers and pockets, so that things can be stashed away securely.
2. It shall not look too obvious to avoid becoming a target of thieves. With carrying a leather bag you easily slip through as a local and act more confident.
3. It shall be small enough so it can be taken to different venues and also used in different situations.
4. It should not be light to not create back pain while carrying it.
5. It should be of good quality, it always pays off.

What sort of bag do you like to take with you when travelling? Looking forward to hear from you.

Travel Etiquette. Hot or not? Taking pictures with your iPad

Every traveller must have met at least one person like the one in the image below by now. I still don’t know what to make of it really. What do you think? I mean the iPad has been designed to take photos, so why not use the feature? Does it rock to take pictures with your iPad when travelling, or is it plain silly to do so?

Do you know this lady taking the pic of a lifetime?

Ever since people started schlepping the iPad to just about everywhere, I feel they take more pictures at museums. The no photography-signs are well ignored by most travellers. Rather than to enjoy the exhibition, people choose to take billions of images of paintings, sculptures etc. with their iPad. Like addicts, the urge to take a picture is too hard to resist. It takes away the magic for me, having to look at all the iPads in front of the paintings. If these guys are after images, why can't they buy the catalogue at the museum store? Many museums are sharing their whole collection online anyway, so why not have a browse there after the visit? But maybe they can't, being compulsive photographers. On the other hand, it is actually great free advertising for museums, if people tweet about their visit and also put up their images on Instagram.

What do you think? Do you love to take pictures at museums to take an active role and create something new from it or do you prefer to simply enjoy the art?

Looking forward to hear from you.

Travel USA: 1 great reason to visit Death Valley National Park

Hot. And I can still jump ...
Without exaggeration I can say that I truly believed the blood in my veins was boiling. It felt as if they were about to burst. Wrong, I didn't just run a marathon. I was standing in Badwater in Death Valley National Park. This is with 280 feet below sea level the lowest point in North America and the temperatures on that day were at around 48.88 degrees Celsius (120 Fahrenheit).

Because of this heat it felt like I had hit a very low point (pun intended of course) … as low as in rock bottom

Why is that place called Badwater you might ask right now?

That question is easy to answer. There is only bad water to be found, to be more precise, there is only saltwater. Since it was freaking hot, there weren't many other visitors around and I had the chance to play walking on the moon for a bit. After walking on the salty flats, gazing at the vast horizon, I turned back and saw this sign up on the cliff: Sea level. As if I wouldn't have known it already, it gave me an even better understanding of how 'low' I was at that moment.

Some might describe Badwater as the most boring place they ever visited ... with lots of nothing to see. It is amazing to see this big emptiness and to feel the heat. Standing in the light hot wind I felt so very tiny. The world seemed once more simply beautiful and like a pretty good place to live. Is there a better reason to visit? I doubt it.

Thoughts on tipping culture and what I tip

 Updated July 2023.

Are you also always talking about equality and a just world and be happy and kind and supportive et al? A good way to appreciate other people’s services is to leave a tip. There is nothing worse than to have deep pockets and short arms, don’t you think?

How do you feel about love-locks?

Love-locks are engraved padlocks and they are found to be everywhere these days. Tourists, travellers and lovers left apparently too many love-locks on the Pont des Arts in Paris. It does make sense in a way; Paris is the city of love, right? So many romantics confessed their love, that a metal grill collapsed onto the path.

What is your opinion on it? Are you all for or against love-locks? Cannot wait to hear from you ...

Travel etiquette - 8 tips for sightseeing in crowded areas

There are obviously many people in this world who are not used to crowds, and they don't realize they often accidentally stop masses when they are in public. Each and every one of us has to share the space in this world with a massive bunch of other people. How many billions of us are out there? It certainly is a great idea to be sensitive to other people. Here are 8 questions. If you answer all of them with a no, you are good to go sightseeing.

Travel etiquette. When did you last steal a clothes hanger from your hotel room?

Again: anti-theft hangers
I know, I know, I know it is likely that you never ever did steal a hanger from a hotel room. But most of the times I am about to put my clothes into the wardrobe of a hotel room I have to fight with these silly hangers.

If none of us would never even plan to steal a hanger why do we have to deal with the theft proved ones? Would the world not be a better place if none of us would have to struggle with these hangers anymore? One step at a time, right? Next time you are about to take a souvenir hanger from a room, think of your fellow travellers first. And maybe, hotels will soon start to use normal hangers. Never stop dreaming ...

Where do you draw the line, have you ever stolen from a hotel room? Looking forward to hear from you.

Eat Well - Travel Often

Just saw this T-Shirt at a store in Cape Town, South Africa and was delighted since I can’t agree more. Don’t you love the odd travel motto to live by? I feel sorry for people who aren’t interested in travel and it really sometimes is hard to connect with them. How will they ever understand the world in its complexity? It is great to read books but they alone can’t, not in a million years, tell you all the lessons to be learned out there. I always feel like eating well and going somewhere and dreaming up the next travel destination …

As soon as one sees the first vehicles in action, one feels hungry for adventure. If one looks at the 497 images and texts on the 272 pages one is ready to jump into a Land Rover and set off on the spot.

Is it even possible to travel light?

As soon as I book a trip I am in heaven. Of course, I am where else would I be? The closer the date of the trip gets, things start to change (albeit only slightly). I never know what to take with me. That is why I leave packing up to the very last minute. No matter what sort of trip I am about to take, it is always hard to find the right clothes, more honest, I better say to find the right amount of clothes. I tend to over pack. Not a surprise really. I know all these tricks and practice them over and over again. I don’t fold my clothes into separate squares, no, I rather roll them together for ultimate space-saving, and I use wrapping paper as well. I never take any books, no, I buy them locally, same goes for toiletries. And I make do with only a few pair of shoes …

I take a boat, a car, a few bicycles, a washing machine …

When I saw these guys in Australia I got really jealous. Pardon the drool, but they can take just as much as they want obviously. I cannot even begin to imagine how it would feel to be able to take so much stuff on vacation. A year later I saw a similar set of the “I-could-not-care-less-what-to-pack-guys” in South Africa.

Campervan, trailor, car, biycles. Travelling light.

Car, trailor, boat. Travelling light.
This is the life ...

What about you? Do you tend to rather take everything you own on vacation or do you always travel light (and that with ease)? If so, do you have any secret tips for travelling light? Cannot wait to hear from you.
